The large, detached house was at the opposite end of the village to the vicarage.

“Seems a tad fancy for a hairdresser to own,” Carla said.

They left the car.

“We shouldn’t make assumptions; she might have a wealthy husband, or she could have inherited this place when either of their parents passed away.”

“That’s true.”

The front garden had a neatly manicured lawn. There was an arch leading around to the side, covered in roses, that had dropped their leaves and flowers, although there were a few unopened buds at the top that had gone brown in the rain.

Sara rang the bell, but there was no answer. She walked across the lawn, through the arch, to the back garden, which was a delight, even at this time of the year. The back door was locked, and there was no sign of life.

“Hello, who are you? And what are you doing in my friend’s garden?” a woman’s voice called over the fence.

Sara crossed the lawn to speak with the woman. She showed her ID as proof. “Sorry, we were hoping to find someone home. Can you tell me who lives here?”

The older woman frowned. “Are you having a laugh? You just told me you were from the police, and here you are, asking me who owns the house. I’m not falling for that one. Now tell me the truth. What are you doing here?”

“Sorry, you’re right to question me. We know that Victoria Holt lives here. I wondered who she lives with. Does she have a husband?”

“This is her parents’ house. She moved back in with them a few years back when she split up with that useless thug of a boyfriend of hers. He beat her black and blue, he did. It was shocking to see the state of her. If anyone had done that to me in my younger days, I would have knifed the bastard.”

“I know I shouldn’t say this, but I agree with you. Are her parents at home?”

“No, you’re out of luck. They’re travelling around the UK for the next two months, making the most of the weather before the winter sets in. I don’t blame them either.”

“I don’t suppose you have a number for them, do you?”

“I’ve got it inside. Is something wrong?”

“I simply need to chat with them. Travelling in what, by the way?”

“They bought one of those fancy campervans. It cost them a fortune, it did, luxurious inside. If I had my time over at their age, I would have done exactly the same thing. Sod going abroad, not when there are so many beautiful areas to visit in this country.”

“Sounds like a wonderful holiday to me. Do you know where they are at the moment?”

“They only set off a couple of weeks ago. Their plan was to start off in Cornwall and drive up to John O’Groats, but nothing was set in stone. They were going to see how the mood took them. Let me get the number for you.”

Sara turned to take in the length of the garden.
